Alberta’s exposure review includes proposed benzene and diesel changes

Alberta’s exposure review includes proposed benzene and diesel changes. Coverage, dates and source evidence for EHS teams.

October 7, 2026

Alberta’s 2026 occupational exposure-limit consultation includes a proposed benzene value of 0.2 ppm as an eight-hour limit and a proposed diesel particulate value of 0.1 mg/m³ measured as elemental carbon. The survey appendix and questions present both as proposed changes.

The diesel row appears in the proposed eight-hour column. The survey separately asks whether the diesel value should apply only to mining workplaces or to all workplaces. Its particle and analytical basis needs to remain attached to the number when the proposal is discussed.

Alberta’s current OHS Code review page identifies 2025 to 2026 feedback as under review. The Alberta exposure-review record links that status with the consultation evidence. The reviewed sources establish no adopted replacement limit or binding commencement date for these proposals.

Keep planning assumptions identified as proposals

APT’s practical interpretation is to compare the proposed values with the site’s existing assessment approach and note where the sampling method or workplace scope would need review if a final change were adopted. Current duties remain tied to the applicable Code.

The province’s March 2025 general Code changes are a separate event. They do not establish adoption of the benzene and diesel proposals discussed here. A future amendment would need to be checked for its final values, coverage and implementation provisions before any compliance calendar is revised.
