Nova Scotia’s exposure rules include a transition for newly issued references

Nova Scotia’s exposure rules include a transition for newly issued references. Coverage, dates and source evidence for EHS teams.

October 7, 2026

Nova Scotia’s Workplace Health and Safety Regulations incorporate the latest version of the ACGIH TLVs and BEIs publication, with a limited transition when a new edition is issued. The provincial incorporation provisions explain how the reference applies within the provincial framework.

For the first four calendar months after issue, including the issue month, section 1.6(5) permits compliance with the required edition or the immediately previous edition. The publication month therefore matters when deciding which reference an assessment used during that period.

The regulator’s Spring 2024 Signal, pages 10 to 11, described the automatic adoption mechanism and highlighted changes involving benzene, epichlorohydrin and fentanyl. This is a historical 2024 update. It establishes no claim that the 2024 numerical values remain the latest incorporated values in October 2026.

The Nova Scotia exposure-reference record keeps that event and its qualification together. An exact legal adoption day for each 2024 publication was not established in the checked material.

APT’s practical interpretation is to record the reference edition and issue month alongside an exposure-limit update. EHS teams can then check whether the transition applied to the date of an assessment. The applicable licensed ACGIH table and verified publication information are needed to complete that check.
