An eight-hour exposure limit of 0.0001 mg/m³ for inhalable fentanyl and fentanyl citrate, expressed as fentanyl, took effect in WorkSafeBC jurisdiction on January 29, 2025. The published decision identifies the sampled fraction and chemical basis alongside the value.
The Board withheld the recommended 15-minute short-term limit because of sampling issues. Its adoption decision therefore supports the eight-hour value without establishing that recommended short-term value as a British Columbia legal limit.
The fentanyl exposure-limit record preserves this qualification. The Board decision summary provides the underlying November 2024 approval route.
Confirm what the analytical method measures
APT’s practical interpretation is to confirm that the sampling and analytical approach addresses the inhalable fraction and reports the result on the stated fentanyl basis. A measurement with a different particle fraction or chemical expression cannot be treated as equivalent without technical justification.
The agency says it will continue monitoring sampling-method availability. EHS teams should check the current regulator guidance before using a method to support an exposure decision, particularly where detection capability could affect interpretation.
The value applies within WorkSafeBC jurisdiction. Other Canadian regimes and suspected surface contamination require separate assessment. Airborne exposure and other potential contact routes need their own assessment under the applicable workplace program.
